There was a retrospective of Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker’s early work (http://bit.ly/lLYykZ) at Sadler’s Wells last month. For those of you who don’t know her, she is a Belgian dancer/choregrapher. I’ve had the immense privilege to see “Fase” and “Elena’s aria” which I both found simply mind-blowing. This drawing is inspired by Violin Fase, but I have made a (large) series of sketches and paintings based on Piano Fase which remains my favourite piece.
My first contact with De K.’s work was with Piano Fase, which I saw via a film made by or for “arte”, the TV channel. Watching that piece was like a revelation. It is hard to explain why but seeing that piece was like seeing in 3D the women/girls that I’ve been drawing for ages now and that come back, repeatedly, in my work.
I find De K.’s work immensely inspiring, in many many ways, and I thank her for that.
